You are Now Providing Care for Children in Nepal!

(Students of the Godawari Slum Education Center)

Nepal is considered one of the world’s poorest countries, with almost a third of the population living below the poverty line. Many regions in the country are lacking in basic education, nutrition, and medical care. Often, family members are forced to travel to other countries to find work, and trafficking is not uncommon. Children under the age of 18 make up 44% of Nepal’s population. For these children, malnutrition is a serious issue, especially in remote regions where food sources are limited. It is estimated that almost half of all children under the age of five are stunted due to malnutrition. Less than 2% of the country’s population identifies as Christian. In August 2018, Nepal lawmakers voted to criminalize “forced conversion and evangelism.” Even so, those claiming faith in God continues to increase. Many say it is because of local ministries that offer nurturing care to those who are suffering. Faith, hope, and love are made evident.

And that hope is shining brightly at the Godawari Slum Education Center in Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Nepal. Around 300 families and 1,000 children call the slum home. Weekday afternoons, 50 school-age children gather at the center to receive tutoring, mentoring, and nutritious meals. The vision of Orphan Outreach in serving the families of Nepal is to break the chains of extreme poverty that can often lead to children being orphaned due to disease and neglect. The staff and leadership of the center are not only committed to providing care for the children, but also developing ways to strengthen families and safeguard the community from trafficking and exploitation.

The ministry partnership has just celebrated its first anniversary, and the impact on the children in the community is noteworthy. Binita, a student whose life has been transformed by the ministry of the Godawari Slum Education Center, wrote a letter to the friends in the United States who have offered up their prayers and support so far.

“Thank you so much for providing us with warm heaters, cupboards, and daily snacks. I am so blessed to be studying at this center as I have better learning opportunities and also exposure to extra-curricular activities such as cleaning campaigns, group activities, arts and crafts, and many more. Here at the center, students get to learn the moral values of life along with a good focus on academics. I would also like to take a moment to thank our loving teachers for helping us to become better human beings every day.”
